maltese rescue

A million thanks to everyone who has donated so far to our Razoo page for the care of the Maltese dogs that we took in from the original 51 abandoned in rural Denton County! Please continue to donate towards their care — their dental bills have exceeded our original estimate by about $300, so if you can, consider making an additional donation or encourage your networks to do so. Many of you have asked us and the media, How could anyone be so cruel? What kind of person or persons could be so evil that they would do this horrifying thing to such defenseless, beautiful creatures? The answer, of course, is that we don’t know how anyone could be so cruel, and we still don’t know (as of this writing) who or what group did this unspeakable thing to these dogs. The Flower Mound Police Department is continuing its investigation and has received numerous leads on possible suspects, but no charges have been filed. They suspect illegal breeders are the culprits.

What we do know, however, is that all the dogs are now in the wonderful, loving care of the Flower Mound Humane Society and several rescue groups across North Texas, including TMHPR. Whatever their past may have been, they now have a hopeful, happy future ahead of them.

Below are some photos provided to us by the Flower Mound Humane Society of the dogs shortly after they were brought in and before they were completely cleaned. You can see how filthy and neglected these dogs were.

Many thanks to the Humane Society of Flower Mound for taking these photos and sharing them with us!

5 Abandoned Maltese Dogs Now in TMHPR’s Care

Maltese dogs abandoned in Denton County

All of the abandoned Maltese dogs in Denton County were found covered in filth, feces and urine. They’re now currently being evaluated and groomed so that they can begin their new lives clean and whole again.

Even those who don’t live in Texas have probably heard the story of over 90 dogs — 51 Maltese and 41 mostly Cavalier King spaniels — dumped along rural roads in Denton County last week. Although no one has claimed ownership or responsibility for the dogs, the animals are suspected to be the victims of illegal puppy mill operators who wanted to “get out of the business fast” after new legislation tightening restrictions on the industry went into effect in early September.

Many commentators on the Internet — well-meaning but otherwise uninformed folks, we hope — have blamed the law and its advocates for the plight of these animals, but in reality it’s the breeders themselves who are to blame. You only have to look at these poor dogs — five of whom are now in the care of TMHPR — to realize just how inhumane and cruel their living conditions must have been, wherever they once lived.

Dirty, heavily matted and covered in feces and urine, some of these dogs could barely walk because of the unkempt condition of their fur. They all need extensive veterinary checks, and because of their likely history as puppy mill dogs (and the fact that they didn’t come with paperwork!), they will need a full set of vaccinations. In addition, precisely because of the appalling lack of veterinary care throughout their young lives, all of them have extensive dental problems that will need to be fixed before they can released for adoption.

And of course, they will all be spayed/neutered and microchipped. They’ll be ready for adoption once all of the above has been performed and they’ve been placed in loving foster homes to evaluate their temperament.

Please consider giving generously to Take Me Home Pet Rescue, either via our Razoo page dedicated to the Maltese dogs or to our PayPal link. It’s easy to make a payment, and both sites accept credit cards. TMHPR is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue group, which means that your donation is deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Once forgotten, abused and subsequently abandoned, these Maltese dogs now have a chance — possibly the only one they’ve ever been given — at living out the rest of their lives surrounded with love and care in forever homes. Once living in cramped, filthy quarters, rarely seeing the outdoors or breathing in fresh air, they will now be free to romp in the grass and run with the wind. Once hopeless and alone, they’ll now know nothing but joy, the warmth of human touch, and the kindness in a human voice.

Please donate now to help us care for these beautiful dogs. In the coming days and weeks we’ll provide continued updates and news about the Maltese dogs, including videos and more photos, so that you can watch them blossom and thrive in their new lives.
